Due for a demographic dilemma: what a rebound in young adults means for post-secondary education in Northern Ontario

After years of decline, Northern Ontario’s population of young adults is expected to grow again. A new policy note from NPI finds that this demographic rebound will threaten the financial model adopted by many local colleges and universities, forcing schools and the provincial government to make tough choices. Absent reforms to public funding for enrolment caps, colleges and universities will have to either reject more local applicants or give up some of the international student revenues upon which they have become increasingly reliant.
