Maya Mittelstaedt

Maya Mittelstaedt is a fourth-year student at the University of Waterloo studying Planning with a specialization in Environmental Planning and Management, a minor in Environment, Resources and Sustainability and a diploma in Environmental Assessment. In her studies and co-op work terms, Maya has researched environmental assessments, Indigenous land use planning, and public participation. Maya is from Toronto and grew up on Toronto Island, a small, tightly knit community on the shores of Lake Ontario. She has worked at Lake Superior Provincial Park and saw firsthand the dramatic landscapes and beauty of the north. In her spare time, Maya enjoys camping, hiking, reading, and playing hockey.

Maya is a Policy Analyst.

Joel Montagnes

A Historian by education, Joel Montagnes made the transition into Public Policy when he realized how much of an impact the Past has on policy issues of the Present and the Future and how the methodologies he learned, as a Historian, can be applied to policy writing and problem solving. He has an Honors B.A. with Distinction in History and Canadian Studies from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in History from the University of Calgary, and is about to complete a Masters of Public Policy from the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. His area of focus has traditionally been Canadian military history, defence policy, national security and international relations.

Joel is a Research Analyst

Andre Ouellet

Andre Ouellet was born in Glace Bay, NS, on Cape Breton Island and grew up in Tilbury, ON. Andre obtained his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science at the University of Windsor, with a focus on voter turnout in Canada, with a specific focus on the federal level. A passion he learned from his mother by tagging along with her as she completed her own B.A. in Political Science at Cape Breton University. From his own childhood lessons, Andre maintained a passion for kindness and compassion to his fellow person through policy and advocacy. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, baking, and watching combat sports.

Andre is a Research Analyst.

Alexander Racicot

Alexander Racicot was born in Montreal and raised in the Greater Toronto Area. He graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from York University in 2019 and will be graduating with a M.A. in Political Science, also from York University, in the fall of 2021. His studies specialized in the history of political and economic thought, international relations, and public policy. He enjoys the outdoors, having spent most summers growing up at the family cottage in Bracebridge, ON. He is also an avid traveller, fiction reader (when there is time in between course readings!), and guitarist.

Alexander is a Research Analyst.

Linzi Redekop

Linzi Redekop is first and foremost a lover of the environment, animals, and people. She envisions a world where every living and non-living being is free to live a healthy and happy life. This drive has fueled her work as a program coordinator, outdoor educator, policy analyst, farmer, and horseperson, in the Ottawa area. Through this work, she has had the opportunity to work for a local food cupboard, a grassroots food policy NGO, and federal government departments. Depending on the day, you might find Linzi farming out in the fields, hiking in the woods, playing with horses, crafting a garment, playing guitar, attempting gymnastics, or just playing video games. From the school side, Linzi is currently working towards completing her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies at Carleton University.

Linzi is a Policy Analyst.

Gillian Sgambelluri

Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Gillian Sgambelluri has been a lifelong true North citizen. Gillian is currently pursuing post-secondary education at Lakehead University in the Honours Bachelor of Commerce program. Specifically, Gillian’s program has allowed her to develop accounting and finance skills that she plans to put into practice at her position as Assistant Accounting Officer at Northern Policy Institute. She is very eager to advance her career at NPI whilst gaining knowledge about her community and giving back to where she was raised. In her spare time, you can almost always find Gillian at the dance studio where she enjoys teaching and participating in some classes of her own. Throughout the summer, she loves to be out in the sun swimming with her dogs at camp.

Gillian Sgambelluri is an Operations Assitant.

We would like to thank RBC Foundation, the SM Blair Foundation, and the Canada Summer Jobs Program (a program of the Government of Canada - Employment and Social Development Canada) for their support of our Experience North program. Without this generous support we would not be able to offer these unique opportunities for youth in Northern Ontario.

Thank You to our Sponsors

Experience North will normally receive some partial funding from the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Applicants should be aware of the eligibility requirements for that program when applying for Experience North:

To be eligible for Canada Summer Jobs Funding, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

The program’s broader objectives as part of the Youth Employment Strategy are to improve the labour market participation of Canadian youth.

*International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. As the objective of the CSJ program is to support youth entering the Canadian labour market, the temporary nature of an international student’s time in Canada does not allow for a long-term connection to the labour market.

"This summer has given me the chance to hone my abilities as a researcher, writer, interviewer, and Excel spreadsheet-maker. It feels like I’ve been granted an all-access backstage pass to the region I grew up in, and I can’t believe how much I’ve learned. "

– Mateo Orrantia (Marathon)

"This summer placement has allowed me to spend my weekdays learning about the regions of Northern Ontario and my weekends out exploring them – I couldn’t ask for anything more. "

– Abby Shillinglaw (Temiskaming Shores)

"I would recommend the Experience North program to anyone who has an interest in community-level development, research and data analysis in Northern Ontario. "

– Mercedes Labelle (North Bay)

"Coming back a second year did not feel like coming back to the same job because NPI has so many different projects and skills needed to complete them that every experience/task feels brand new! "

– Maia Kvas (Timmins)

"I was excited to be able to take what I learned in school and apply it to this role. Through working as a Communications Officer, I was able to gain professional experience related to my field. "

– Christina Fera (Sault Ste. Marie)

"Thanks to Northern Policy Institute, I have been given the opportunity to be immersed in the realm of public policy and debate and continue expanding my knowledge in the field of communications. "

– Andrew Jalak (Sault Ste. Marie)
