Event background

The availability of data to inform decisions and programs in support of rural communities has been a longstanding data gap, including a lack of commonly accepted definitions of ‘rural’ Canada. These gaps affect Canadians, as they hinder policymakers’ ability to create and implement programs and policies.

In response to this, Statistics Canada tries to fill these gaps by integrating data from traditional and alternative sources. It aims to provide high-quality, granular, accessible, and timely information on social and economic issues to ensure that the needs and aspirations of rural Canadians are addressed.
